Smiths started life as a clock making business in 1780. After a major downturn in demand for clocks after the war, the business transformed into the successful company you see today.
With a turnover of £90 million, Smiths is now a group of companies serving general engineering, motorsport and aerospace.
J. Smith & Sons (the company that became Smiths Metal Centres) was established in 1780 at a site in Clerkenwell, London. The original business was clock making and J. Smiths & Sons became a very well renowned name in the UK.
Smiths is one of the UK's largest stockholders with 13 service centres in all corners of the country. We've evolved to become an expert in raw material supply with an annual turnover of over £90 million.
Our business has grown and separated into specialist businesses. Apart from Smiths Metal Centres, we also have divisions which specialise in markets such as aerospace and motorsport.
